How It Works

10 Step Colour Coded Process

The WADOKA Program is a 10-step ‘colour-coded’ process that the student commits to in order to achieve a ‘black belt’ status. This is crucial as it provides a very detailed introduction to the preliminary patterns or “Katas“. This sets the stage to service a novel and user-friendly approach to the katas that have to be understood and performed in the later stages of the process.

The WADOKA Karate Program Details

Completion of the WADOKA Program requires students to achieve a passing grade of 70% in each of their colored belt tests. They will be instructed to submit a video of them performing the test for evaluation by the Sensei.

Phase 1: Beginner Katas (White to Purple Belt)

  • In this phase of the course, the student learns 4 “mini-kata” based on a kata that contains 24 “individual moves” in total.
  • The sole purpose of this Kata is to set up a foundational method for learning the other Kata while emphasizing a meditation-like mindset when practicing these repetitive moves every day.
  • What we did was break down a complete Kata into 24 individual “pieces” (“moves”) which we further parceled out into “chunks” of nine (9), eight (8) and seven (7) “moves.”
  • We refer to this technique as the “dim sum” method of learning. It fuels motivation. The student easily digests these “chunks” and is therefore allowed to concentrate in perfecting these movements by considering other factors such as power, timing, posture, etc.
  • The dim sum method allows for proper pacing or ‘pauses’: students will explore the timing that results in combining 2 or 3 moves into one count while moving onto the next set of moves.
  • At this stage, the entire “chunk” system transforms into eleven (11) “combination moves.” This stage is very critical in terms of “getting to know” the Kata because it is designed to get students to ingest the Kata with a more ‘rhythmic’ quality. This produces a demeanor of effortless grace when the student reaches the final stage of performing the complete Kata.

Phase 2: Advanced Katas (Red to Black Belt)

  • At this stage in the course, students will be given completely new Katas with move-sets of increasing difficulty and complexity.
  • One unique kata is associated for each colored belt during this remaining section of the course.
  • Unlike the previous section, students will be introduced to only the “combination version” for each of these new Katas and will be expected to perform them that way for their grading submissions.
  • In order to encourage learning retention and habitual training, students will be required to demonstrate every Kata that they learned for their final black-belt grading.
